You do realize that the same criticism could have been levied regarding motor vehicle operators not being able to see pedestrians due to the planter. Regardless of vehicle, you have to maintain control of your vehicle and not hit pedestrians in a crosswalk. Cyclists have to yield just like motor vehicle operators.

Have you been to Central Square since the bike lane went in? The bike lane is where the parking used to be, so the planter on the bump out blocks the line of sight between people walking and biking.

People driving have the planter off to one side and have several seconds in which to spot people waiting to cross. People on bikes have about a second between when the sightline opens up and when they arrive at the crosswalk. Moving the planter a few feet would fix it so there are several seconds of visibility again.

Needless to say, motor vehicles generally travel at higher speeds than bikes and take longer to stop. Cyclists should approach the crosswalk at reduced speed and be prepared to stop.
